Sci-Fi City Port Videos

Sci-Fi City Port 1

A short that follows my progress in the piece “Sci-Fi City Port”
My Idea for the concept was to set the time and place in 1950’s Japan. I was able to point these facts out but using the cargo containers of that time, anchor and style of factory in the background.
I didn’t want to make it too clear it was in Japan by using famous land marks, I wanted to be subtle, so I added Japanese symbols and text.
The reason I chose the port to look like this, I felt it would make the image more interesting and I wanted the robot given the feeling that they are the ones doing the manual labour. I also like the relation between the two metals (the cargo containers) and (the robot) as if to say that they are very simpler and that one isn’t really smarter than the other. I feel that this image does show off a science fiction city port with the lights and the involvement of the robot, and I also get the impression of the 1950’s Japan with the use of colours and items.
This was an image I wanted from the start, as the cargo containers pointed towards the robot telling the viewer right away that its sci-fi.
This piece did go thru a couple of changes, example: there was ment to be two robots to begin with one in the back ground and the other in the foreground giving the view a more detailed to focus on, but that made the scene too busy. The other change was the adding of the anchor to the robots hand, I did want to give the robot an action but I wasn’t able to settle, a create would have been blocking sight of him, and i felt an anchor works well was it gives the feel of a tool plus it also suggests toward the image being near sea.
All in all, I am very happy with this piece, portion of the image works, colours are balanced, image isn’t over exposed or too dark, the message is carryed and I feel that I is a sci-fi city port.
if anything I could change would be to work on the out lines of the cargo containers and to fix the background as I feel it just disappears in to black.

Sci-Fi City Port 2

A short that follows my progress in the piece “Sci-Fi City Port”
This was my first concept dwarfing again I wanted to keep in theme with it being 1950’s japan and a sci-fi port, I stuck with the place ane period by including a japanese cargo ship with symbols from that time, other facts helping the image would be the including of a 1950’s vending machine with text printed, plus the structure of the land mass  is very japanese. it was also important to stay with the sci-fi city port element. This image displays more of being a city port with the action of docking and being a city port.
This image has also taken more changes to it than the other, as my original idea was to use robots that were science fiction robots from that periods’ films and tv, where the robots are blocking, giant, square inventions. I like this idea until I started importing him in to the scene, he did fit in at all and didn’t look right not even the slightest, I tried giving the robot more actions like: caring creates, interacting with other robots and humans, and even making a que of them making them look more like drones but it just made the image look weird. In the end I just settle on having a more futuristic robot. I took inspection from the mechs from”lost Planet”, and the suit from “sucker punch,” where I came up with this un-armed smoother robot, I felt this on worked as its structure was more human so putting it him in an action would have been a lot easier.
A problem I face with this was I was unable to create the wooden planked floor as I hoped for, as I was un able to get the perspective spot on, to get around issue I created the style of planks I wanted in 3Ds max, rendered a screen shot and used that as a guide line, and gave its wooden texture by using downloadable brushes.
In the end I still wasnt happy with the out come, it felt this the image was too open and the viewers angle was off, I the decided to experiment with filters and different tools to see if there was any improvements and it seemed that cropping the image improved it vastly, focusing the viewer’s eye, and then topping it off with a rain effect, that brought more life to the light of the image.
I’ve been up and down with this image, ive gotta past a few problems and now I feel that its finished, the piece looks well and all messaged are complete.
